Clair Research Fellowship

Women’s health research is underfunded, and many of its basic questions still don’t have enough data behind them.

Clair has committed

$1M

to pioneering women’s health research

The Clair Research Fellowship funds early-career researchers to study women’s health with Clair devices and data.

  • A reward of up to $15,000 for your study

  • Travel to present your findings at a scientific conference

  • Clair devices and the Clair Research app for your study participants

  • Research access to the Clair metrics your study needs

  • Regular check-ins with Clair’s research team throughout your study

You choose your own research question.
We fund work in areas where continuous data from Clair can help.

Cycle physiology in daily life

Heart rate, HRV, skin temperature, breathing and sleep all shift across the menstrual cycle. This area covers what those patterns look like in everyday life and how they differ with age, body composition, contraception and health history.

Perimenopause and menopause

The menopause transition happens over years, but it’s usually studied in clinic visits months apart. This area covers what happens in between: hot flashes and night sweats, changes in sleep, and how these shift over time and with treatment.

Women in sport and training

Much of what we know about training and recovery comes from studies of men. This area covers how hormonal cycles affect training load, recovery and performance in active women and female athletes.

Medications and hormone exposures

Hormonal contraception, hormone therapy, fertility treatments and other medications change the body’s hormonal environment, and people respond differently. This area covers how those changes show up over weeks and months.

Symptoms, mood and sleep

Premenstrual symptoms, PMDD, menstrual migraine and cycle-related sleep changes affect millions of people and are still poorly understood. This area covers the physiology around them.

Open track

Strong proposals outside these areas that use Clair data are welcome. We expect to fund a small number.

How to apply

Apply through the application form by 11:59 PM PT on January 15, 2027.

You’ll upload two files.

1. Your application, as one PDF

  • A proposal of up to four pages, in this order: problem statement (about 150 words), background and significance (3/4 page), aims and research questions (1/2 page), methods (1 1/2 pages), data request (1/2 page), and a timeline by month through December 2027 (1/2 page).
  • A one-page budget showing how you’ll use the award.
  • An advisor letter of one page, if you have one.
  • Your employer’s sign-off, if you work for a university, hospital or company.

2. Your CV or NIH biosketch, up to two pages.

In your data request, identify the Clair metrics your study needs, what each will be used to assess and any additional reference measurements. Access is limited to approved, study-specific metrics. Definitions and limitations of available outputs should be checked before finalising a protocol.

Use Arial 11 pt with margins of at least half an inch. Each file can be up to 10 MB.

How we review

Clair’s research team and scientific advisors review every application. We’ll invite shortlisted applicants to a short video call in late January. Whether you or your organization buy Clair products has nothing to do with selection.

Eligibility

Early-career researchers based in the United States: graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, medical residents and fellows, faculty within five years of their first appointment, and independent researchers. You apply as an individual. A research advisor is recommended but not required.

No. You apply as an individual. If you’re employed, include your employer’s sign-off.
